Packrat Pad: How to Get Rid of All the Junk You Accumulated This Winter

It’s that time of year when families across the country begin their spring cleaning process, and a huge part of this tradition involves reducing the amount of things in your possession. Do you have stacks of stuff piled up around the house? Is your garage stuffed from floor to ceiling with items that haven’t been used in years? Do you have so much stuff that you’re now throwing money away on public storage because your house is filled to the max?

If you answered, “Yes” to any of these questions, then it’s time to make some major changes and make the decision to let go of some of your clutter. Go through your home and assign every item you come across to one of the four following categories.

Keep It

Obviously, you’re going to keep a lot of your possessions because you still use them on a regular basis. These everyday items are easy to hold onto. But do you have duplicate items? How many spatulas do you really need? Keep one and get rid of the rest. If you have items that you never use and could live without, then make the hard choice and get rid of them. It might be difficult at first, but you’ll be glad as the clutter begins to noticeably disappear.

Sell It

If you have the time and could use a little extra cash, consider selling your items at a garage sale or yard sale. You won’t get a premium price, but you’ll get rid of a lot of stuff quickly. If you have some designer brand items in excellent condition, then you could make a little more money by selling them on eBay and similar sites. Be sure to put a little money aside for shipping out those first few items. Then after that, the sold items will cover your shipping costs as you go forward.

Give It Away

If you don’t want to take the time or don’t have the knowledge or desire to sell your old stuff, then load it all up and donate it to Goodwill or a similar charity. You will get a tax deduction which can save you money come tax time. In some cases, that might turn out better than selling the items since you save a lot of time and hassle. Plus, it’s always nice to help people in need.

Trash It

This might seem like the most difficult choice of them all, but it is a necessity for many people today. If you have piles of old stuff filling entire rooms of your home and stacks of wood and rusty old tools in the backyard, face the reality that you are hoarding stuff. Get someone to help you get rid of it all. Get a work crew together, get a dumpster rental and bang it all out in one week. Don’t overthink it. Just do it so that you can have some space to breathe again.

Clutter is a real problem for many people today. If your stash of stuff has gotten out of hand, take some drastic steps this season and get rid of it. Do it quickly, just as if you were ripping a bandage off an old wound. It might sting at first, but the faster you get it done, the sooner you can feel some relief.
