New York is one of those places that you just have to visit. What they say is true: it is the city that never sleeps, but there’s a lot more to it than that. In fact, if you’re heading out there with your kids, then there are plenty of things that you can do to make the most out of your city break, whilst also relaxing together as the city rumbles on. But what can you actually do whilst you’re in NYC, that is fun for the entire family? We’ve noted down 5 ideas here.
#1: Visit the Empire State Building
Despite its grandiose appearance, the Empire State Building went from being non-existent to towering over the rest of the city – at 103 stories tall – in just over a year. Pretty impressive, huh? This one is great for kids, as you get to go up in an exciting Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-style elevator until you eventually get to the top, where you can see over the whole of NYC through the viewers.
#2: Swing by the American Museum of Natural History
Let’s be honest, there was a time when museums were seen as pretty boring, and the only people that visited them were almost as old as the relics themselves. This has totally changed now, and the American Museum of Natural History will keep your kids (and you) entertained for hours. The exhibitions currently show the history of the T-rex, and also include a space show about the universe. Cool, huh?
#3: Get Broadway tickets
If you’re traveling with kids, the idea of visiting a Broadway show may not have crossed your mind. Of course, if your children are young, you may want to pass this one up, but older kids will love getting all dressed up and going to any number of top Broadway shows, especially if it’s on a subject of interest to them. Try and nab some cheap tickets for Broadway, and get your best outfits ready for the night.
#4: Go during the holiday season
We’ve all seen those pictures of NYC when the holidays are coming, and the snow is drifting down. Let’s be honest, this is one of the most beautiful things that you (and your kids) will ever see, and there’s something to be said for having tasty hot cocoas together, and looking around the stores for some extra gifts for your loved ones. If you want to experience a different NYC, go in the winter months.
#5: Walk the High Line
The High Line is a 2km walkway that goes over the Chelsea area, and it is home to a natural ‘living system’ which borders the footway. It is an important, innovative example of NYC architecture, but moreover, it offers some great views of the Hudson River and the rest of the city and is a nice walk for people of all ages. It’s definitely one worth adding to the list if you’re traveling as a family!
So, if you’re heading to NYC with your loved ones, then make sure that you fit these 5 things into your schedule!
