Top Superfoods Kids Should Eat

Guest post contributed by Mia Morales

As a parent, you should be sure that your child’s diet is as beneficial as possible, and one way of doing this is to make sure that they are eating plenty of superfoods every week.

Superfoods are natural foods that are filled with healthy qualities and are highly digestible. These foods help to improve the immune system, build strong bones, and maintain optimal health.

The superfoods listed below will help you make sure your kid is getting everything they need to grow strong, in both mind and body.

Blueberries

Not only are blueberries incredibly tasty, they are also an excellent source of body supporting qualities. They include plenty of vitamins and minerals as well as helpful antioxidants. These berries also have antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-diarrheal properties.

Blueberries are excellent as a standalone snack, but they also make for a great addition to cereal, oatmeal, or yogurt.

Kale

Kale’s reputation is growing rapidly, and more evidence is surfacing regularly which shows the effectiveness of the leafy green on our wellbeing. Kale is chock full of Vitamin K as well as vitamins A and C, magnesium, and fiber.

The green also has an ample amount of calcium and iron which will help your child’s bones and muscles grow strong.

While kale works great as part of a salad, many kids may prefer to consume the veggie as part of a smoothie blend, or as kale chips.

Apples

This fruit is filled with plenty of fiber and is great for children. Like other fruits, apples are also high in antioxidants and many vitamins which are great for boosting the immune system.

The fruit has been linked to numerous health benefits including the prevention of bad cholesterol, cancer, asthma, and diabetes. The complex carbohydrates in apples also do a great job of giving kids long-lasting energy.

Carrots

A sometimes overlooked superfood, carrots have all of the vitamin-packed qualities of the other items on this list but with some other great benefits as well.

The antioxidants and vitamins in carrots are great for improving the immune system, but carrots have also been linked to providing improvements to children’s vision and skin.

Carrots can be cooked or eaten raw. You may also choose to cook a carrot cake or similar carrot-based dessert with the veggie.

Broccoli

Broccoli is an essential vegetable for promoting growth in children. The veggie contains numerous nutrients including magnesium, potassium, zinc, folic acid, and iron, and B vitamins. Broccoli offers a lot of health benefits and has been shown to reduce the risk of cancer, improve the immune system, strengthen bones, and aid in digestion.

Many kids have an aversion to broccoli, so to make it more palatable you may choose to use it in soup or a casserole.

Yogurt

Yogurt is a great super food for kids thanks to its high protein content, many vitamins, and the good bacteria it contains.

The helpful bacteria and probiotics in yogurt aid with immune system functioning and digestion. Yogurt also promotes strong bones and strong teeth.

Feel free to mix in blueberries, chocolate chips, honey, or other toppings to your child’s yogurt to make it more enjoyable.

Sweet Potatoes

The sweet potato is another superfood that is full of fiber and complex carbohydrates, meaning the vegetable offers many of the same benefits as apples. Sweet potatoes are also an excellent source of potassium and Vitamin A. In addition to many other benefits, sweet potatoes have also been shown to help protect against blindness.

Sweet potatoes can be served in a number of ways and make for great nutrition meals. You may choose to bake them, grill them, or boil them. You may also consider cooking sweet potato fries or chips as a fun alternative to regular potato alternatives.

Conclusion

If you’re feeding your children some or all of these superfoods regularly, you can rest assured that your kids will grow up healthier and stronger. For strengthening the immune system, aiding in digestion, and building strong bones, these superfoods simply can’t be beaten.
