Money-Saving Tips for Families with Kids

Many of us dream of having kids, and it is wonderful when that dream becomes a reality. However, once you settle into your new role as a parent, you realize that you want to provide everything to your kids. Unfortunately, that’s not so easy to do when everything costs money. Even if you have a great job or a partner to share the expenses with, it can still be hard to satisfy all of your family’s needs. So how can you provide as much as possible while on a budget? Here are some money-saving tips for families with kids.

Be organized with your money

When it comes to your finances, it’s essential to be well-organized and plan things. Here are a few ideas on how to do that.

Establish a weekly budget

Estimate how much money you require in one week for food, bills, and other necessary items. Once you establish the amount, withdraw it in cash – it’s much easier to keep track of it that way. If you want to be even more organized, you can make separate envelopes for each spending category. After you do all this, try as much as possible not to exceed that budget unless it’s an emergency or some unforeseen expense.

The piggy bank money-saving technique

You might think this is a childish idea, but it’s very effective. For example, you can set your mind on a certain amount that you can spare, such as 2$ or 5$. Then, when you get home at the end of the day, you check your wallet, and if you have a 2$ or 5$ bill in there, you place it in the piggy bank. This is also something that you can teach your kids to do to help them become aware of how important it is to save money.

Think ahead

When you have kids, and the budget is tight, it’s essential to plan everything because this way, you won’t be forced to spend a lot last-minute.

Gifts

Of course, you want to spoil your kids on their birthday and Christmas, but don’t forget about all those birthday parties they get invited to throughout the year.

Sure, you can’t forbid your children to go to these events. But one thing you can do is buy presents in advance when they are on sale. Apart from your kids, you’re probably buying gifts for other family members and friends. In this case, you can apply the same money-saving trick or organize Secret Santa (where each person buys only one present for another person in the group) or collective birthday gifts.

Holidays

Unfortunately, there’s not much that you can do to make holidays less expensive. However, if you plan them, you can at least buy cheaper plane tickets and maybe find more affordable accommodation. Besides, you’ll have more time to put some money aside.

Moving

This is even tougher than holidays because moving is costly and involves many unwanted expenses. However, if your family is growing and you have no more space, or you get a fantastic job offer in a different city, you have no way of avoiding this. So how can you prevent additional costs? Again, planning is vital. If you have enough time, you can do market research and ask for estimates from various moving companies. You can also check what services they provide and whether there are some things you can eliminate (e.g., packing/unpacking costs). This way, you are sure to avoid any unwanted moving expenses.

Try to reduce your bills

This is not an easy task since the providers’ prices are fixed, but you still have a few options. First, you can try to reduce consumption. This doesn’t mean that you and your kids have to freeze inside the house, but you can turn down the heat by 1-2 degrees, and you’ll notice a difference in the monthly bill. Second, you should check all your subscriptions and verify if there aren’t any cheaper options or services you can live without (e.g., a subscription for 100 TV channels that nobody watches).

Save money on food

It probably sounds strange to reduce the cost of living by decreasing food expenses, especially when you and your children need food to survive. But let’s not be so dramatic and think smaller. There are three easy tricks that you can use here:

  • Plan the meals for one week. Make a grocery list of all the ingredients you need for those meals. And, when you go shopping, stick to that list and don’t wander around the store. You should also avoid buying a lot of ready-to-eat and processed food and go for something healthy instead.

  • Cook larger quantities and place some in the freezer for later use. This way, you won’t be forced to order food when you don’t have time to cook or have some unannounced guests coming over for dinner.
  • Buy nonperishables in bulk. This is an excellent money-saving technique for a family because large stores usually have special offers and discounts for buying in bulk. And this doesn’t refer only to food, since you can also buy other products you need around the house in bulk, such as toilet paper, cleaning products, toiletries, etc.

Save money on clothes

Kids grow up very fast, and they constantly need new clothes and footwear, which cost a lot of money. So, what can you do? Here are some money-saving tips for families to save money on kids’ clothes:

  • Borrow from friends. You probably have some friends with older kids that will be happy to give you the clothes that their children have outgrown. And you can do the same once other friends have kids because, as you know, sharing is caring.
  • Buy larger sizes when you see them on sale. It doesn’t matter that your kids will only wear them after a few months; if they are cheap, it means that you are reducing your future expenses.
  • Buy second-hand. There’s absolutely no shame in doing this, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Even if second-hand clothes are cheap, they can be of high quality, and you can find things that are no longer available in stores. And you can apply this trick to your wardrobe as well.

Conclusion

Being a parent is never easy, especially when you want your kids to have everything they desire. But the reality is that there are always some things that you simply cannot afford, and that’s perfectly understandable. Don’t worry – your children won’t hate you for it. Nevertheless, these money-saving tips for families can help you be less stressed about your finances and enjoy your family life more.
