When you want to take a shower, do your laundry, or wash your dishes, you rely on your water heater to give you plenty of hot water for these tasks. However, the day will come when you start to notice things just aren’t the same when you need various amounts of hot water. When this happens, it could mean you need a new water heater. To know for sure if this is the case, here are four signs that usually indicate a new water heater is needed.
Lack of Hot Water
If you start to notice the water for your showers or laundry is not nearly as hot as once before, this often means your current water heater is in decline for a variety of reasons. Rather than wait until you’re taking cold showers, it’s best to get it replaced or at minimum get water heater repair.
Reddish Color to Your Water
When you go to take a shower or do other tasks, you expect to see clear water coming from a tap or showerhead. However, if your water heater needs to be replaced, you may start to see a reddish color in your home’s water. If you do, this indicates the inside of the heater is starting to rust out.
Repair After Repair
If you now notice that your water heater is needing one repair after another to keep it working properly, you need to buy a new water heater. On average, a typical water heater should not need any repairs more than two times per year. If you’ve started to feel like the repair technician has moved into your home, get a new water heater.
Your Water Heater is Old
In today’s world, the typical water heater is made to last 10-15 years before it needs to be replaced. Should your water heater be 20 years old or even older, it’s definitely time for a newer model. More than likely, your older water heater is showing signs of corrosion or making plenty of knocking noises by now, all of which indicate its best days are over. Rather than try to get it fixed or let it hang around until it fails altogether, you should get a replacement.
Water heaters are some of the most durable and reliable appliances in homes today. Yet should you notice any of the signs mentioned here, it will be time to thank your current water heater for a job well done, call a plumber, and make arrangements to have a new water heater installed in your home.
