The sun has ultraviolet (UV) rays that are harmful to the skin. These rays are becoming harsher and harsher by the day because of the depletion of the ozone layer. Excessive exposure to these can cause skin cancer in the long run. Thus, dermatologists and experts have developed sunscreens as a method of protection.

However, a lot of people don’t really know how to wear their sunscreen properly. Here are 12 do’s and don’ts that you must take note of:

  • Apply Sunscreen Everyday

It’s recommended to use sunscreen every day and not only when you’re out on the beach. This is because the sun can also cause other skin problems such as redness, freckles, spots, and allergy. The sun can also be a huge factor in skin aging. It can also reduce the prevalence of skin problems such as dark spots and uneven coloration.

  • Do Your Research

Research about the type of sunscreen that would best suit your skin type. There are many kinds of sunscreens in the market today. They also have different characteristics and each has its own pros and cons.

You can also easily get overwhelmed because of the countless products available. However, you can read about the product descriptions online as well as watch or read product reviews. This would help you narrow down what you’re looking for.

  • Use Different Kinds of Sunscreen

There are different types of sunscreens for different parts of the body. Sunscreens used on the beach are also different from what you should wear every day.

Milder and lighter products are used for the face. While heavier and thicker products are used for the body. Products for the beach also tend to be thicker and stickier. Thus, you may need to use different kinds of sunscreens for optimal protection. Experts say mineral powder sunscreen can also work.

  • Apply Evenly

People often forget to apply sunscreen to other areas of the body. You should apply it even on areas that are hard to reach such as the neck and back. Don’t also forget to apply it to your hands and feet.

  • Apply Ahead Of Time

You must apply sunscreen before you head out for the day. Don’t wait for you to be exposed until you apply it. This is because the harmful rays of the sun may already do damage.

Sunscreens also need time to dry up and be absorbed by the skin. So, it’s recommended that you apply them 15 to 30 minutes before you go out.

A study in the UK confirms that around 67% of people don’t use enough sunscreen. Don’t be one of them. You should apply a generous amount to get maximum protection. It would be pointless to apply a little amount as it would not give you the protection you need.

  • Rely on Sunscreen Alone

Sunscreens can only help you reduce the sun’s harmful effects. However, you still need to take extra precautions when staying out for long hours under the sun.

You can wear a hat or cap to protect your hair and scalp from extreme heat. Sunglasses would also help shield your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun. Don’t rely on sunscreen alone and wear appropriate clothing.

  • Overapplication

Applying too much sunscreen may also do more harm than good. It may irritate the skin if you put it too often than recommended. Like any other lotions, they also contain chemicals that can be dangerous when not used appropriately.

  • Not Reading The Label

Don’t forget to read the label and instructions on the sunscreen product you’re using. Make sure you thoroughly understand the proper way of applying and storing it. Always double-check the instructions and don’t forget to take note of the expiration date.

  • Fall For Placebos

There’s also an abundance of misconceptions and fake information about sunscreens and beauty or skincare products, in general.
