Few things are more refreshing than a dip in the pool on a hot summer day. However, installing a pool is a significant investment. Finding the right contractor can ensure that your investment lasts for decades. Therefore, these are some tips for finding the right pool contractor.

Review Your Pool Goals

Your first step should include setting your pool goals. For example, do you want above- or inground pool construction? Where do you want your pool located, and how large should it be? Set a budget.

You should also review pool shapes and dimensions as well as special features, such as self-cleaning capabilities. Choose whether you want a deck or patio around the pool and if you will do it yourself or add it to your pool contract.

Conduct Some Research

Search for local pool contractors. Review their websites to determine the types of services they offer and the types of pools they build. Check for the company’s longevity. Look over any photos and videos of the contractors’ builds. Read any customer reviews on their websites and elsewhere on the internet.

Then, contact the Better Business Bureau and search for the ratings of the contractors that can fulfill your needs. You should also speak with friends, family members or neighbors who have had a pool installed, especially if the installation was recent. Look for any industry memberships, licensing and certifications the contractors have.

Conduct Interviews with the Contractors

Call your prospects. If they cannot speak with you immediately, give them up to 48 hours or two business days. Anyone who cannot get back to you in that time may be too busy to take on your project.

Visit with those who contact you back. Ask for proof of licensing and insurance. Discuss any subcontractors they use and their qualifications. Discuss your project and get a quote in writing. Ask about their payment schedules. Request and contact their references.

After you have gathered all the information you need, compare your bids, the companies’ reputations and the timeframes they outlined. Then, you are ready to choose your pool contractor.

  1. It’s good to know that you should look for local contractors. My neighbor was talking to me yesterday afternoon while at my house for lunch about how she wants to get a pool built in her backyard for her kids to use this summer. I’ll pass this information along to her so she can know how to find a good pool contractor.
