How to Improve the Water Quality in Your Home

If you are like most homeowners, you probably don’t think about the quality of your water unless something is noticeably off. However, the quality of the water you use at home can have a significant impact on your health.

That said, it makes sense that you take the necessary steps to ensure that your water quality at home is exceptional. Nowadays, some homeowners turn to companies that provide water purification to ensure their water at home is of good quality.

In a perfect world, everyone will have access to clean and safe drinking water. Unfortunately, it’s not always the case. Consumption of contaminated water can cause many unpleasant symptoms.

Aside from your health, you must also remember that your pets deserve clean and fresh drinking water. The same is true with your garden plants. Most are sensitive to the chemicals, sodium, and high pH levels in contaminated water.

Easy Ways to Improve Your Water Quality at Home

If you are unhappy with the quality of your water at home, it is reassuring to know there are certain things you can do about it. Below are some of the easy and effective ways you can make your water at home safe, clean, and fresh:

Use a water filter.

One of the quickest and most effective ways to improve your water quality at home is to install a water filter. There are different filtration systems available at your disposal nowadays. By law, only licensed plumbers can install water filters.

  • Shower filter. To improve the quality of your showers, have a filter fitted into your shower head. Some homeowners notice they have smoother skin and healthier hair after installing a shower filter.
  • Kitchen filter. Have a simple filtration system installed to significantly improve the water quality in the kitchen. A water filter will not only make your cooking/drinking water cleaner and healthier, it can also make it taste better.
  • Whole house filter. If you want to improve water quality at home, whole house filtration is your best option. Rather than having filters installed in specific parts of your house, it is plumbed in at the main entry points.

Flush your taps.

To ensure great water quality, it is recommended that you flush at least a glassful of water from your taps each morning before you use it for drinking. This is especially helpful if you have been away for a long period.

If you have been away for a week or more, consider running the taps for at least 2 minutes before drinking. However, you need to remember that the purpose of flushing is to improve the quality of your water and not mitigate health problems.

Boil your water.

Boiling your water can help remove dangerous contaminants so it’s safe for drinking. If you suspect you have contaminated water, always boil it before drinking. It is also ideal to have it checked by a professional to ensure it is safe.

Have your plumbing maintained accordingly.

Older pipes are more prone to corrosion, which can sometimes result in lead contamination. When your plumbing system is maintained accordingly, you can minimize the chance of lead contaminating your water.

Final Thoughts

If you live in an older home or notice your water looks cloudy or tastes off, call a plumber immediately. Professional plumbers can diagnose any problems with your system before they contaminate your pipes and significantly affect the quality of your water.
