It is common to get an itchy scalp, but it still can’t be neglected as it can worsen over time causing serious infections. There are numerous mistakes that can irritate your scalp. For example, not using a shampoo according to your hair type and not moisturizing the hair. You should be able to identify whether you have dandruff or a dry scalp.

Is dandruff similar to a dry scalp?

Dandruff is a cause of an oily scalp more than a cause of a dry scalp. The buildup remains when you don’t clean your hair correctly. A dry scalp is a result of not using enough oils on your scalp. Both dry scalp and dandruff cause your scalp to itch. In addition, dandruff comes and goes with the change in seasons.

What causes itchy and dry scalp?

A dry and itchy scalp is a cause of stress, the use of the wrong shampoo, and insufficient hair care. Seborrheic dermatitis, which is a dry, itchy scalp, is also caused by the above reasons. Your baby can also get it. For that, you need to use products for cradle cap.

How can you deal with an itchy, dry scalp?

An itchy scalp is an indication of scalp dryness. You shouldn’t ignore it and see a dermatologist or use some remedies.

Apple cider vinegar

What works wonders in removing any buildup due to bacteria is Apple cider vinegar. If your scalp is red and flaky due to extreme itchiness, using Apple cider vinegar will reduce redness and inflammation as it has antifungal and antibacterial properties.

How to use it?

Don’t use Apple cider vinegar straight on the scalp. Add honey or dilute it in warm water. After shampooing your hair, rinse your head with the diluted mixture of Apple cider vinegar. The results will be clean hair and scalp.

Peppermint oil

Peppermint oil is excellent in giving you relief from an itchy scalp.

How to use it?

Dilute peppermint and olive oil and apply it. Give your scalp a good massage. Leave it for 15-20 mins and shampoo thoroughly. Use peppermint tea as a rinse for the best results. It will calm down the redness caused by dandruff flakes. Repeat the process every week.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is best for treating fungal infections and dryness. It is also antiseptic, so you can use it if you have blisters on your scalp due to excessive itching.

How to use it?

As tea tree oil is very concentrated, please don’t use it directly. Incorporate 20 droplets of tea tree oil into the shampoo you use. You can also combine tree tea with olive oil and give a scalp massage to yourself. Applying it will treat your dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis that were causing itchiness.

Shampoo containing Zinc pyrithione

People who suffer from dry scalp have high amounts of histamine on their scalp skin.

Benefits of using Zinc pyrithione

Using Zinc pyrithione in shampoos was found to be effective for the ones with itchy scalps. You must go to your dermatologist and ask for his recommendation regarding which Zinc pyrithione shampoo suits you and how much proportion should be in the shampoo. See what proportion of Zinc pyrithione and which shampoo brand works for you.

Scrub your scalp

Sometimes washing your hair is just not enough. You can invest in a good scalp scrub that will make your scalp healthy, eliminating buildup and itchiness.

A scalp scrub will give you the following benefits

  • It takes the product buildup off your scalp
  • Prevents itchiness
  • Wipes out the flaky dandruff flakes
  • Removes dead skin, and excessive oils causing bacteria

How to use a scalp scrub

Before shampooing your hair, do a scalp scrub treatment for at least 10 mins. Focus on the areas where there is itchiness and buildup of your head. Don’t be harsh while scrubbing your scalp. Ask your dermatologist to recommend a medicated scalp scrub.

Getting rid of a dry scalp

Making a few changes to your hair wash routine can help prevent a dry scalp.

Ways to prevent a dry scalp

  • Go for a moisturizing sulfate-free shampoo
  • Wash your hair thrice a week only
  • Increase water intake
  • Do meditation and yoga in your backyard to reduce stress
  • Use fish oils and food items rich in omega 3

Unhealthy hair is a cause of a dry scalp. Take your dermatologist’s recommendations and change your diet and hair wash routine to retain a healthy and moisturized scalp. Be consistent with the oil treatments for long-lasting results.
