A Look at the Root Causes of Urinary Incontinence

Unfortunately, urinary incontinence (UI) is a common problem. Indeed, a survey published in the National Library of Medicine reports that over 75 million women suffer UI, with over 30 percent in a survey stating that they experienced issues at least monthly. While urinary incontinence is less common among men, millions of males also experience it.

We’ll take a closer look at the root causes of urinary incontinence and also how it can be treated. While UI is common, there are a few ways to address it. Perhaps the most effective method is to use an Emsella chair (we’ll explain why later). If you want to try this treatment for UI, you can search for treatment providers near you. You might search for “Emsella treatment Chicago” or “Emsella treatment Florida”, for example.

A Closer Look at What Causes Urinary Incontinence

Unfortunately, many different things can lead to urinary incontinence. As noted above, women are more likely to experience this condition than men. This is due to a few different reasons, including the physical structures of the urinary system and the rest of the body. UI affects roughly half of women, but for some, it may only occur from time to time. Roughly three-quarters of women 65 or older will experience UI to some extent or another.

Urinary incontinence is particularly common among women who are pregnant, with well over half experiencing it. Pregnancy is common, with over 130,000 babies born in the state of Illinois in 2021, for example. Fortunately, most women will suffer only minor or mild incontinence but even this can be extremely disruptive. Pregnancy is stressful on the body, including increased pressure on various muscles that can impact the bladder and urinary tract. Additionally, hormone changes may also result in increased risks of experiencing UI.

Further, as people age, they are more likely to experience urinary incontinence. This can be due to a variety of factors, including the gradual weakening of muscles and other tissues. As muscles grow weaker, you may struggle to completely control your bladder. Even if someone is generally in control, a sneeze or cough could result in them losing control. While UI is still a more common issue among women, many aging males will have to deal with it as well.

Some foods may cause temporary UI. Common culprits include alcohol, caffeine, artificial sweeteners, chili peppers, and carbonated drinks, including seltzer water. Someone might be enjoying a glass of wine at their favorite restaurant in Lincoln Park when disaster strikes. The good news is that in these cases, changing your dietary habits could provide relief.

Some medications may make people more prone to urinary incontinence, including medications for high blood pressure and other cardiovascular problems. Sedatives, which may relax muscles, can also lead to UI. If you think medicine may be causing your UI, you may want to chat with your doctor.

Weak Pelvic Muscles and UI

One of the biggest causes of urinary incontinence is weak pelvic floor muscles. These muscles are crucial for controlling the bladder and urinary tract. As folks age, these muscles may grow weaker. Medications could also cause these muscles to relax, resulting in leakage. Conditions like pregnancy could put enough pressure on the pelvic floor muscles to essentially overwhelm them.

The good news is that there are a variety of ways you can strengthen these muscles. Strengthening the muscles could help folks control UI caused by medications, medical conditions, and general aging. The right strength training exercises could help folks strengthen their pelvic floor muscles. Another excellent form of treatment is using an Emsella Chair.

An Emsella chair causes thousands of contractions in the pelvic floor muscles. This helps strengthen the muscles, with contractions essentially being a workout. While physical exercise routines can be effective, they often can’t stimulate as many contractors as an Emsella Chair. The right treatment with an Emsella Chair can produce relatively quick results, especially compared to exercises on their own.
