New York City is one of the most famous cities on earth, and draws literally millions of people within its city limits each year. It is understandable why so many people would love to come to New York City. Not only are there incredible events, like New Year’s Eve in Times Square, but there are an incredible amount of things to do in the city, including Broadway, sports teams, museums, and historical monuments that make it, quite possibly, the most unique city on earth. This doesn’t even cover such things as Wall Street, the United Nations, or the site of 9/11.
While many of us are quite familiar with the city of New York as there may be quite a few things about the city you are not aware of. Here are five for your consideration.
The New York Yankees are the most loved and hated sports franchise. With more championships than any other professional sports team in the world, the New York Yankees are an organization that most cities would love to have. It is not only the championships, but the incredible history surrounding the team, which includes some of the most famous athletes in all of sports, including Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, and Lou Gehrig. Because the Yankees have been so successful, there are many who have come to love and admire this organization as their favorite in all of sports. However, it is also led many to absolutely loathe and hate this organization, making it the most loved and hated in all of sports.
Some way musicians have to audition. If you are not a person who is able to take a New York airport shuttle and are instead forced to ride the subway, you will likely come across a group of musicians along the way who perform for the spare change that people are willing to throw to them. What you may not be aware is that these people are required to audition and get approval from the city to be able to perform. There truly is no city like New York.
The Staten Island ferry is free. There is a lot to see in New York City, and one of the best ways to do so is by taking the Staten Island ferry. This will take you along the New York skyline, take you near the Statue of Liberty, and show you some of the most fantastic sites the city that never sleeps has to offer. Best of all, it’s completely free for you to take.
It costs $1 million to drive a cab. If you take a cab or hire a limo service New York has to offer, what you may not realize is that it cost $1 million for a person to be a cab driver. It’s not the license they need but the medallion that has to be provided on the cab that cost some much money. This is why virtually every cab and limo service New York has been owned by a large business.
Albert Einstein’s eyeballs are stored in a safe deposit box. Because he was such a genius, Albert Einstein has become the source of many interesting tales. One of them is that his eyeballs are stored in a safe deposit box by a physician in the city. Why one would store such a thing is not known, but it is another oddity about NYC.
