What You Need to Do After Finding a Ceiling Leak

Are you noticing strange pools of water in your home? Are you hearing a constant drip that you can’t quite place the source of? If stains appear on your walls or ceilings, this could be proof of a leak that you need to fix. A ceiling leak, if left untreated, can lead to serious damage. Here is what you can do to fix it.

Mark the Area Where Water is Pooling

The first thing you should check for is pools of water that may be forming on the floor. This is one of the tell-tale signs of a leak in your ceiling. If you do find these pools, you need to mark them. You can use items such as chalk, painter’s tape, or even a bucket to spotlight the area where the issue is found.

Once you have done the marking, you should call on the services of a Virginia roofing expert or whichever group of professionals in your area. Fixing a leak in the ceiling may be more than your expertise, strength, or energy can handle. If this is the case, there is no need to risk your health or safety. Calling in an expert to handle the matter will be the best way to get a speedy solution.

Check to See if Condensation is Present

Your next step should be to see if any kind of condensation is present. This is one of the most common causes of a leak in your ceiling. If it turns out that this is the case, you can quickly solve the problem. The easiest way to do so will be to run a dehumidifier to soak up moisture. This will take a few hours.

Another method that you can consider making use of will be to install an exhaust fan. This is another cost-effective method of mopping up excess condensation. As with a dehumidifier, it will take a few hours to clear up the moisture. However, in either case, you will begin to see positive results in minutes.

Follow Where a Pool of Water Leads

Don’t just assume that a pool of water has its origins in one particular place. As it turns out, this may not be the case at all. Relying on any one source of origin with no further info is a good way to waste valuable time and energy. Your best bet to find a ceiling leak is to follow a trail of water upwards.

Doing so may reveal a surprising source of the problem. The area of the drip is usually quite obvious. However, it may reveal a leak in the roof that is coming from a place you thought was invulnerable. It may even be a place where you recently had repair or replacement work done, such as the tiles on your roof.

If the leak is revealed as coming from your ceiling, your next course of action is clear. Follow the drip upward and, once you have identified it, take photos. The more photo and video evidence you have, the easier it will be for the repair team that you call in. They can then get straight to the source of the problem.

Check for Leaks in Your Attic

The next place that you need to pay attention to will be the attic of your home. This could well be the ultimate source of the leak. It’s a very good idea to go up there and poke around for a bit. Bring a flashlight with you so that you can quickly investigate the source of any drips.

Roll up any fiberglass insulation batts that you come across. If the insulation is cellulose, scoop up the loose fibers with a broom and dustpan. Set it aside so that it won’t get waterlogged and start creating a leak.

Don’t Let a Leak in Your Ceiling Get Worse

Now is the time for you to deal with any leaks that you may notice coming from your ceiling. This is not the kind of issue that you can afford to ignore. You should also shy away from cutting corners when fixing it. Your best bet will be to call on the services of a roof and ceiling expert to repair the problem.
