Many Americans are relocating for various reasons. This may be an exciting and scary moment in your life, which is absolutely normal, but you cannot forget the law. The following are four things you need to remember when moving to a new state.
Update Mailing Address
The first thing you need to do is change your mailing address. People and organizations need to know where you are at all times. Tax-related papers from your work need to be mailed to your home though there are other official letters that you need to consider. You can change your mailing address online or by visiting your local post office.
Change Voter Registration
Those who are very interested in voting need to take steps to ensure that you can. You need to be registered in the county that you are going to be voting in. Some states require you to register long before an election. This means it is in your best interest to get this taken care of as soon as possible. Some states allow you to update your voter’s registration at the DMV while others ask you to visit an official city office.
Change Car Registration
Another thing you are going to have to do when moving to a new state is get your car registered, and update your license. Thanks to the technology available today you can even handle this process online using eTags and similar sites. This process can take a while, and it may cost you a pretty penny, but it is required. Some states allow you to stay in their state without updating these things for a few months, but you have to check with the state to make sure you are in the know. You do not want to break the law.
Take Care of Education
Those with kids need to make sure your children are enrolled in the district they belong to. You probably already thought about this, but this is just a reminder. Plus, it is better to get this taken care of as early as possible to make sure your kids are ready to enjoy their brand new school. Some districts allow you to do this online, too, so be sure to check just in case.
Hopefully, some of these suggestions make it easier for you to settle into your new state. It is okay if you feel a little anxious since this is a big move, but give it time, and it should start feeling better. These steps just make the whole settling-in process smoother.
