Beginner Gardener? 4 Supplies You’ll Need for Getting Started

You might have always liked the idea of planting your own garden and taking care of your own plants, but you might be a little bit overwhelmed as a beginner gardener. This is certainly understandable, but the good news is that you don’t actually have to have a lot of supplies and knowledge to get started. In fact, once you stock up on the four supplies listed below, you should not have a problem getting started with your first gardening project.

Soil

First of all, if you want to grow plants successfully, you need to have good-quality soil. You may be able to use the soil that is already in your yard; there are a few different ways that you can test the soil to ensure that it’s nutrient-rich before you use it. Otherwise, you can purchase bagged soil that is ideal for growing flowers, vegetables and other plants.

Mulch

Although you don’t technically have to use mulch to grow a garden, it’s not a bad idea to look for a local mulch supplier before you get started. If you add mulch to your garden, you can help prevent weeds; this helps you keep your plants healthy and really cuts down on the amount of work that you have to do, too. Mulch also looks nice, and it helps keep your plants warm and protected from the elements. It comes in a few different colors and types, so you shouldn’t have a hard time finding mulch that will look great in your garden.

Seeds

Of course, if you want to start growing plants, you will need seeds. Spend a little bit of time choosing the right seeds for you. First, you will need to decide if you want to grow decorative plants or plants that you can eat, such as vegetables. You should also look for seeds that will do well in your climate.

Hand Tools

You might find that you love working with your hands when you are working in your garden, but you will probably need at least a few hand tools to make things easier. You can purchase well-made trowels and other similar tools at a garden supply center or home improvement store, and they shouldn’t cost too much.

If you want to get started as a beginner gardener, you should set yourself up for success with the right tools and supplies. If you start with the four supplies listed above, you should have what you need to get started.
