The Best Ways to Store Fresh Food

Did you know the average family throws out nearly 15% of their fresh food in one year?  That is a lot of waste! I always feel guilty throwing out food.  Especially produce that wasn’t cheap or bought with coupons!  Here are a few of the best ways to store fresh food in your home.

Store your vegetables like onions, carrots, and potatoes in a cellar or basement.  This will keep these vegetables cool and dry, away from direct sunlight.  When you store them in the fridge, they will spoil a lot faster.  If you do not have a cellar or basement, try storing your vegetables in brown paper bags.  If using the bag storage, you may want to consider keeping them separated by kind.

A vacuum sealer is great option for storing fresh foods.  This is a small investment but worth it. Vacuum-sealed foods can stay fresh for months longer than other stored foods.  Also, you can vacuum seal foods and keep them in the freezer for later use.

Storing cheese can be another mystery.  Try wrapping the cheese in wax paper before storing it in the fridge. This will allow the cheese to breathe but will keep out any excess moisture.

Do you use fresh herbs?  Always store your fresh herbs in water. Try keeping parsley, basil, and cilantro in a glass filled with approximately one inch of water in the cabinet.   Place your non-leafy herbs like rosemary, thyme, and sage in a damp paper towel and store in a reusable plastic bag in the fridge.

By using these seven ideas for storing fresh food longer, you can save money, keep food out of your trashcan and in the stomachs of those you love.
