Homemade Spaghetti Sauce Recipe

Spaghetti has always been one of my favorite dishes to cook and eat!  There is just something special about  Italian food.  It is so rich and hearty.

This recipe is a family recipe passed down from my Aunt Candace.  She was a great inspiration to me in the kitchen.  I remember days when she would bring out the old,  I mean old, recipe cards to proudly show off.   She shared some pretty amazing things with me.   I am so happy that I have the opportunity to share this with you! 😉

Homemade Spaghetti Sauce Recipe

Ingredients

  • (1) lb ground beef
  • (1) lb Italian Sausage Mild
  • (1) 6oz can of Tomato Paste
  • (2) 15oz cans of Tomato Sauce
  • (1) 28oz can of Petite Diced Tomatoes
  • 1/2 Green Bell Pepper Diced or Chopped Finely
  • 1/2 Sweet Onion Diced or Chopped Finely
  • 1 Tbsp of Sweet Basil
  • 1 Tbsp of Italian Seasoning
  • 1-2 Bay Leaves
  • 2 Tbsp of Minced Garlic
  • 1 lb Spaghetti Pasta

Instructions

  1. Place all meat into a large stock pot with diced onion and bell pepper
  2. Cook the meat and veggies until completely done
  3. Drain fat if desired
  4. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well
  5. Place lid on and cook on medium low to simmer for 2-3 hours stirring occasionally (the longer, the better!)
  6. Cook Pasta and Serve!

Notes

Tip for those of you who have not cooked with Bay Leaves, take them out when you serve the sauce over pasta. If you notice a little grease floating on the top of the sauce, don't panic. It is from the sausage. All you have to do is spoon it out on a napkin.

This is a great recipe to make when you know you’ll be home most of the day.  Sometimes I will let mine cook for 3 hours on low.  The house smells amazing after cooking this recipe.  When they can’t take it any longer, pop in a pound of pasta to boil for 10 minutes, drain and serve!

It is a great dish for freezing left-overs too.   Simply pour into freezer bags after cooling and freeze for a busy day when you have little or no time to prepare a delicious hot meal for your family.
